Cummings-60 Years
Roy and Joyce Cummings are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on Monday, January 12, 2015. These native South Dakotans spent most of their 60-year marriage in the Yakima Valley.
Roy was raised on a farm in the Bijou Hills east of Chamberlin, South Dakota, and Joyce grew up in Presho, South Dakota. The marriage took place at Zion Lutheran Church in Presho, South Dakota. It was presided over by Pastor J.R. Sheppard and witnessed by the groom’s brother and sister.
The newlyweds moved to Seattle, Washington, just a couple weeks after marrying to embark on a business venture with a brother-in-law. While in Seattle, two sons were born, David and Dana. Seattle did not provide the lifestyle that this rural couple enjoyed, so they purchased a nice farm north of Outlook in the spring of 1959, where their third son, Mark, was born. Outlook and Sunnyside provided farming opportunities not available in South Dakota and proved to be an excellent choice. The diverse agriculture and growing local economy made for a fun and successful life.
Hard work combined with cash crops like sugar beets and mint powered Roy’s farm operation while he tripled his acreage in the 1960s. Once the three boys were in school, Joyce made full use of her nursing degree earned at St. John’s McNamara Rapid City Regional Hospital School of Nursing in 1953. The majority of a 40-plus year nursing career was spent at Sunny Haven Nursing Home and Hillcrest Nursing Home, both in Sunnyside. Outside of work their interests were motor sports for Roy and music for Joyce. They shared a love for touring on a Honda Gold Wing motorcycle with their friends in two local motorcycle clubs and a strong appreciation for the friends they have made over the last 60 years.
